admit you're a spare
A sports radio segment i heard this morning and an intense basketball game that i was involved in yesterday have got my brain thinking about how prideful we humans are.
The game of basketball, a supposively friendly game of 4-on-4 (court is small so we play 4 on a side) became intense and full of all kinds of arguing, complaining, whining, etc etc. we were playing a team that probably should have beat us but we jumped out to a commanding 10-2 lead (game to 11) . Actually 1 guy on the opposing team started getting really frustrated and complaining and stuff and just got more frustrated as his team got further and further behind. It's just sad to me to look around the court and see these guys who think that a pick-up game is like the NBA championship or something, that winning that game will just make their whole lives that much better.. dont get me wrong, i am not saying that you should be lazy and just not try to win.... i love competition and i try my best at whatever i do.. but at some point you have to realize the importance and significance that 1 pick up game has to do with your life. i think that some of those guys out there are still trying to relive their old dreams of playing college or pro ball and they just need to admit that they arent Pro material.
Its so hard for us as humans though to not live in our past and to admit we are a lot lousier at things than we really are. About the radio segment... they were talking about people who are sports imposters... these people will say they are pro sports athletes when they are not... they mentioned one guy who they saw in a hotel that was signing autographs, claiming that he was the captain of the special teams for the Dallas Cowboys!! who knows if this guy had an injury that destroyed his dream as a youth or what, but that is just messed up... i guess we are all a little messed up.. and the first way to getting out of our mess is to admit we are all a little bit like that spare part.... not as good as we should be, not as visible to the world as we want to be, and not as useful to our community as we ought to be.... I know from my own life and from my friends lives that if we admit to ourselves and to God who we are in relation to Him, then we begin to change because we realize that He can turn us into something great... which may not be in the form of being able to shoot lights out from downtown

are you saying that i have a spare tire? ... yes, i think that competitiveness eats at us from the inside out, and sadly, most people who claim to follow jesus are not much better.
If winning isn't everything,
then why do we keep score? :o)
At the same time there is something to say for the guy that competes with all his heart when it really doesn’t matter. It is not the championship, it is not the NBA, it is not important but he is there to win every time because he loves to compete. Competition is what makes us better at everything we do. Having said that, accepting failure without being a 30+ year old baby is nice too!
